64 LOCAL UNITED WAYS “CONFIRMED” TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST BOY SCOUTS

Grassfire.net conducts nationwide grassroots effort that reveals United
Way de-funding much more widespread than reported

CHESAPEAKE, VA — Today, Grassfire.net is releasing its OFFICIAL REPORT showing widespread United Way discrimination against the Boy Scouts of America.

After a report indicated that 48 United Ways had de-funded the Scouts, Grassfire.net asked its 350,000 citizen activists to send in completed field reports from around the nation in an effort to see how serious the problem was. Within weeks, 4,345 field reports were filed.

Grassfire.net then followed up these reports by contacting dozens of local United Way chapters and confirming that 64 local United Way agencies representing 20 states have de-funded the Boy Scouts because of their refusal to sign a sexual orientation non-discrimation policy. These 64 are in addition to any others that may have been reported or confirmed by other sources.

As a result of the United Way de-funding, several Scout councils—fearing they couldn’t survive without funding, have signed the non-discriminatory policy. “What does this say for our country,” says Steve Elliott, President of Grassfire.net, “when an organization that stands for all that is moral and good in our nation, is bullied into relaxing its high standards just so it can survive.”

The release of this Official Report comes just days before Grassfire.net delivers 350,000 signed petitions to the United Way headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia from citizens who are vigorously supporting the Scouts decision maintain its standards.

Grassfire.net is one of the nation’s leading online grassroots citizen activist organizations, offering real impact, real feedback and real results to hundreds of thousands of people across the nation and around the world.
