Maxwell, IA--Although the Senate is in recess this week, Grassfire.org is using the time to spearhead a massive “Secure Our Border” grassroots petition presentation to Senate District offices in all 50 states.

“Time is so short on the amnesty debate. We needed to move quickly giving citizens an opportunity to sound off against the proposed amnesty legislation while also getting them personally involved,” says Grassfire.org President Steve Elliott.

After sending out an alert to more than 500,000 Grassfire team members asking for volunteers to hand deliver petitions to Senate offices, Elliott admitted he was concerned. “We’d never done anything like this before. I wasn’t sure what the grassroots response would be.”

Hours later, volunteers from coast-to-coast were answering the call to action. “The grassroots response has been utterly amazing. We’ve actually had to turn folks away!” says Elliott. “Citizens are passionate about this issue, and they feel they have been ignored by our leadership. This is their way to deliver a poignant message to their Senators—in the language they best understand—votes!”

Grassfire is printing, and shipping more than 638,000 petitions to individuals for Thursday and Friday presentations. “We’ve asked the volunteers to take pictures and send in field reports of the deliveries,” says Elliott. “I anticipate some amazing stories!”

In addition to this first-ever citizen led petition presentation, Grassfire has sent hundreds of thousands of faxes, and inspired countless citizen phone calls to Senate offices expressing outrage and contempt for the Senate’s “amnesty” legislation. “Despite efforts to silence American citizens on this issue, we will be heard,” says Elliott. “This issue is just too compelling for citizens to sit at home!”
